About 20 years ago, Ron Tuttle started the R&D into hydroponic food growing in greenhouses for Saladacres, in Ardrossan, Alberta, Canada. There were many disappointments and failures in the development period, but persistence paid off in successes, and good designs for a “construction ready” commercial operation.  Five prototypes were built and operated in order to master the methods. The largest prototype was built in central Alberta in 1992, and funded by the Canadian government. It operated in the winter with artificial lighting, when outside temperatures were as low as -40 F.

In recent years, a big concern was the rising costs of fossil fuels – namely oil and natural gas. Now we are proud to say that all our main energy sources for heating, cooling, and processing are from renewable ‘earth friendly’ biomass fuels which are mainly cellulose from trees, straw, agricultural waste such as corn stalks, and cardboard and paper from municipal landfills. This also controls our production costs.

When building ranges, Saladacres follows a budget for materials and labor. Cost control is a big advantage, and will insure that projects come in ”on budget”. We will not waver from using these controls. Saladacres is guided by the wise use of money, and self reliance. By keeping the cost of ranges down, we can pay the ranges off faster, so they can earn money for our shareholders, staff, and partners.

We are at the beginning of a food revolution. Many health conscious people are encouraging a revolution in food, turning from industrial foods to fresh foods as a way of staying healthy.  Many health topics are in the Health section linked to this website with special attention given to the food chain, mineral depletion, and the "organic" trend which are dangerous to health.

Marketing and sales are foremost at Saladacres. Our business model is locating an operation next to every city on the continent. This will provide the “best produce in the world” on a regular basis to local customers. Often, produce travels for thousands of miles and consumes millions of gallons of diesel and gasoline to get to markets.

There is a profit sharing incentive for people involved in production and marketing. We price our produce to be competitive with field produce, and below "organic" prices. It will be available year round. By doing this we will insure our position in the market.

Saladacres facilities are to be located in Gainesville FL, Uvalde Texas, Ohio, Maine, and other locations in the U.S. Construction planning is in progress.  We want production partners.  The potential projects are outlined in “Partnerships” and "Joint Ventures" in this section.

Salad Greenhouse Inc. is a Canadian company associated with Saladacres, but operates independently.  Both companies share technical and market information for their mutual benefit

A more detailed description of what Saladacres is all about is in the ‘Overview’ section of this website. This gives an overview that is expanded on the website, and in other information available by contacting us. A video of the operation is also available on request.
